Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), sometimes called pancreatic insufficiency for short, is the inability to break down and digest food properly. It is associated with certain diseases and conditions that affect the pancreas. Some of these diseases you are born with, like cystic fibrosis, while other conditions may occur later in life such as:

  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Pancreatectomy
  • Gastric Surgery
  • Diabetes (Type I and IIIC)
  • Biliary or pancreatic duct obstruction

Symptoms of EPI can vary and they often overlap with other gastrointestinal challenges. They can include diarrhea, gas, bloating, stomach pain and/or foul-smelling, oily stools that float.

If you think you may have EPI, complete the Symptom Checker and share the results with your doctor.
