Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), or pancreatic insufficiency, results in the inability to digest key nutrients. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of lipase, amylase and protease and is associated with certain diseases and conditions that affect the pancreas.
Once diagnosed, patients are started on pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT). Gastroentrologists work with patient’s primary care provider to evaluate the cause of EPI and optimize PERT dosing.
